My neighbors’ Christmas lights. It’s great to be shooting outside at night in late November and not be freezing.

A huge old wolf spider in my basement. They’re such cooperative subjects. They tend to freeze when they realize they’ve been spotted.

A Red-bellied woodpecker guarding the seed pile. A red belly will easily stand its ground against 3 or 4 blue jays. Sort of like a ninja vs. a gang of street toughs.

Here’s a couple of older shots of a Great Horned Owl I never got around to posting. I saw this owl four nights in a row during mid-August 2008. Just after dusk I would see it running around in my yard like it was chasing something. Mice perhaps, or it may have been looking for cicadas.

A couple of late night long exposures of a common grey tree frog. It was clinging to the front of my garage under the light. The first one is 30 seconds, the second is 10 seconds. I shot these on a hot night last August. 300 mm macro. I could go for some of that August heat & humidity right now.

A friend of mine found this painted turtle in his yard this summer. He brought it over to me for some pics and then I turned it loose in the water hole. It hung around for a few days and then wandered off downstream.

The lunar eclipse from early this morning. Conditions were perfect – clear & calm with temps in the low 30s. The Cold Moon was full at 2:14 AM CST. The coyotes were howling and several times I heard the echo of an owl hooting in the slough down across the highway. I even saw a shooting star. Very satisfactory for an event which has not occurred in the last 456 years.

This large hawk had just finished eating a vole before it moved to the top of the birdhouse. I doubt the little screech owl living inside liked having such a big hawk on its roof.

This screech owl has made the flicker box in my front yard its winter quarters. I’m hoping for a nest next spring.

A large Woodhouse’s toad that lived in my garage for most of the summer. Note the extremities of a daddy longlegs sticking out of its mouth in the lower photo.

I’ll be adding a Thunderbirds gallery to the main site soon.

A very small tree frog on the back of my shed. Approximately 1.25″ long. 300mm macro. Note the tiny spider webs in the large version.

I was chasing this tiny baby American toad around in the dark with a flashlight the other night. I didn’t think it was ever going to hold still long enough for a shot. Eventually it stopped for breath up against the side of my shed and I got a few quick shots.
Sigma 150mm 2.8 EX Macro + Sigma 2x TC and Sigma EM-140 DG ring flash. A great setup for nighttime macros with my Canon 1D3.

A young American kestrel (aka sparrow hawk) contemplates taking the big leap to join a sibling already out of the nest.
The first juvenile kestrel to leave the nest. It was not yet able to fly, but could flap its wings to maneuver around.
The final shot of the first bird to leave the nest. After failing to make it back up the tree (above) it relocated to a nearby mulberry clump. At that point I decided it was time to leave. The parents were already quite suspicious of me and I didn’t want to interfere with this youngster getting his lunch.
I went back to check on them a couple of days later and they were all gone from the nest.
Thanks again to Mid-American Energy for notifying me about the electric pole replacement.
